Shared note
John retired by 1901. John and his family living Devonport, Devon in 1871; Taunton, Somerset in 1881; Portland, Dorset in 1891; and Melcombe Regis, Dorset in 1901. John gave his father's name as Robert Hayton (deceased), a labourer, at his marriage in 1869. However, his birth certificate shows that he was the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Hayton. In 1851 John was a pupil inmate in Kendal workhouse. It seems possible that he was brought up some of the time by Elizabeth's brother Robert Hayton, although there seeems to be no evidence to confirm this.
